Still Planning Away - One Child Done 3 to Go

Wow! This is taking a longs time. Usually I can knock this out in a week or so. I am two weeks in or so, and I'm just skimming the surface.

We homeschool in many different ways but we lean the most toward the Charlotte Mason method of learning. We enjoy the depth of knowledge in learning thourgh living books and experiences. We love to be able to go on numerous filed trips each year with our homeschool friends and also take long walks often as a family. Nature is very much a part of our family. We do not try to fit our family to any one curriculum, instead we use any programs we find for our family as a guide through the subject. Unit Studies are one way we incorporate subjects within a theme. The kids usually pick the theme and then away we go. Hands-on activities are a favorite in our house. We are not workbook type people, we make things, create things and apply things directly immediately. For example, for JoJo this year we will be covering grammar and writing, but you won't see this on our subject list, because she will be learning it within her History and Science. We will teach her the new concepts of the lesson and she will complete it through her other subjects. Our Literature is also weaved throughout our subjects.

So far this is what we have for JoJo (8th grade)

I haven't gotten far at all with my other children's school plans yet. This is the game plan so far for JoJo. The phrase subject to change without notice is a standard in our house. Hope this post was helpful.

To Be or Not to Be ADHD, that is the Question

I would like to point out that I'm just a mom who researches about all kinds of issues that arise in my kids that my grandparents never had. Why is that? Why is it that my grandmother never had to be put on ADHD meds.

If you have already read the post called Sugar is Sugar, Really? I Beg to Differ you may be wondering what affects does the artificial flavoring and color do to us that's so bad? Well this post we will slightly tap the effects of artificial food coloring. Flavoring will be a separate post.

The Feingold Assoc. is a primary source for me since a little over a year ago when I wanted to find out about the effects of food on two of our children who were diagnosed with ADD and ADHD. We were prescribed medication which made its own issues within my kids. Dd13, at that time 10, lost around 20lbs and refused to eat on the only medication that actually worked for the ADD. Ds7, then 5, took 2 different kinds, and the only one that worked was too much for his little body.

So we looked up alternatives to the meds, and found Feingold. Since we changed our children's diets we found that don't need the medication anymore. We kicked the meds to the curb after just 2 months of taking them. As long as we stick to the plan, they are fine. If we don't stick to the plan, bad things happen. Check out my Sugar is Sugar, Really? I Beg to Differ post for the description of one time when my ds7 was given Sugar Wafers, from 3 weeks ago.

Take your time to click and read through the links below. They will guide you through what we have found through them and other sites about food coloring.
The Feingold® Association of the United States. - An organization of families and professionals founded in 1976

Check this article out from Feingold on the amount of mercury and lead allowed, by the FDA, in our foods and medication, and how much is actually in them. But aren't the FD&C dyes certified to be safe?

This article from Feingold shows how food coloring like Yellow #5, Red #40 Blue #1 are directly linked to ADHD. My friends, does this sound at all familiar to you? Just asking. How can a simple diet help so many different problems?

On Feingold's main page they have a you tube video with an introduction to what Feingold has discovered. Introduction by Jane Hersey, Feingold Association National Director. They tell you what the effects are of colorings, but also, fragrances, BHT, BHA, plus other additives and preservatives as well. These things are just as important to avoid, but not covered in 'this' post. They will be individually covered in a later post.

Feingold has a list of the symptoms helped by eliminating the preservatives, additives, colors & flavoring from our diets. Symptoms that may be helped by the Feingold Program.

Just to clarify, I have not purchased any materials from Feingold's website, for the shear fact that I have a habit of buying things that we really don't "need", So, when I get the message from the Lord that I have exhaused all measures of our own research, then we will probably get some materials from Feingold and other trusted organizations to fill in the gaps if need be.

I have to ask, have you ever thought about how medications help you get better? Is it because some scientist created a combo of chemicals that happen to react together to cure or treat something you have? Your answer is probably Yes. Ok, another question. How do most medications get in your body? Your answer is probably, ingested. Even if your answers are different than my assumptions of your answers, stay with me here. Does it make sense that the food you ingest may also have been created by some scientist creating a combo of chemicals that happen to react together to destroy your body? Just a thought of mine. Our country used to get food made by combining foods. It seems now we are getting "food" that combines derivatives of foods that have been chemically or biologically altered. Not to mention most are genetically altered. (There will be another post at a later date about GMOs)

Listed below are a few articles on Food Coloring in the News within the last year. The reason I am linking these is to show you that this is a concern all over America and the only people knocking it down are those who make a buck off the foods we buy.

Food coloring linked to ADHD? Ditch those gummy bears - purple text is quoted from the article
FDA advisory panel will decide whether available data links artificial food dyes and the disorder.
The government previously ruled that there is no proven relationship between food dyes and hyperactivity in most children.

Certified (―synthetic‖) color additives have been a source of controversy in the U.S. since the 1970s, when pediatrician Dr. Benjamin Feingold first claimed a link between children’s behavior and consumption of the additives. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA or the Agency) reviewed literature available at the time and concluded that the data suggested that some children may be adversely affected by synthetic colors but that more research was needed for the Agency to make any final determination with regard to the effects of color additives.

Ok, so back in the 1970's there was a link found between Certified (―synthetic‖) color additives and children. but that more research was needed for the Agency to make any final determination with regard to the effects of color additives. They quoted that Dr. Benjamin Feingold first claimed a link between children’s behavior and consumption of the additives. According to the opening statement those are color additives. I love the misuse of language here. This is such a common practice of confusion, so that we are so tongue-tied on the language that we forget about the fact that they knew in the 70's of this problem, and are disregarding the research. If you look into Dr. Feingold's website you can see for yourself the results of omitting Certified (―synthetic‖) color additives from the diet.

Experiment with omitting color additives for yourself. Don't rely on my blog, the government, or Dr. Feingold to tell you what you should eat. Try omitting the coloring and see if there is a difference in you or your child. That is the only way you will be convinced of whether it is a problem for your family or not.

My only purpose for this post is to share what we have been through with a little background knowledge for you to read for yourself on the subject if you want. The main reason I'm sharing this with you, is because we should KNOW what we are eating whether it's synthetic / natural / GMO / or just plain dangerous. Know what you are eating. Don't be too tired to care, or hold our FDA to such high standards. Do you know who the FDA is? You will find that quite a few or most are owners of the big companies that make a lot of the stuff we are trying to eliminate fro our families diet. Check it out for yourself.

I tried an experiment on my son who was prescribed ADHD meds and couldn't keep up with the side effects of them. After a month of being off the medication we tried the following experiment and I found a direct link in food coloring to him. I gave him a homemade sugar cookie without food coloring, and he responded normal. The next day he ate the same breakfast and such and I gave him the same sugar cookie recipe - homemade cookie with food coloring, and he went crazy. We could not carry on a conversation with him, he could not repeat back to me what I said, he just wanted another cookie. About 45 minutes after eating the cookie my child who does not nap fell asleep in the middle of the playroom floor. That was just one way we tried to figure out what was one of the things spinning him out of control all the time. We did experiments with other additives later throughout the year and we have been able to keep him and his sister13 off all medication without the issues we had before, unless unsuspecting family and friends give them food with the "junk" in it.

Do synthetic food colors cause hyperactivity? Critics blame the additives for triggering behavioral problems in youngsters (purple text is quoted from the article)

In this article I read: "The (synthetic food dyes) used in the U.S. are absolutely safe," said Joseph Borzelleca, a professor emeritus of pharmacology and toxicology at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine. "Food colors are among the most thoroughly studied of the food ingredients."

That hasn't always been the case. Originally, naturally derived ingredients were used to make food look more appealing — saffron, for example, gave rice a yellow tint. In the 1850s, manufacturers began using long-lasting coal-tar dyes to brighten both fabric and food, a practice that sickened countless unsuspecting consumers.

Nearly 200 substances were in use when safety testing was finally required in 1960; only a handful survived the testing process.

I was a little shocked by this section of the article, to say the least. It took them 110 YEARS to study these additives at all. but Food colors are among the most thoroughly studied of the food ingredients." And the people didn't have a reaction, they died! WOW! So they switched to synthetic food dyes. I guess since are kids aren't dying, it's ok. NO! Not ok for me. Read on to see what the study mentioned in the above article said about the final outcome & what the FDA said about it. Really you should read the whole article.

The issue resurfaced in 2007 after University of Southampton researchers reported in the Lancet that hyperactive behavior increased in two groups of children — age 3 and ages 8 and 9 — when they consumed two different mixtures of artificial colors, plus a preservative.

And the study didn't just rely on parental ratings of their children's behavior, which can be subject to bias; it also used ratings generated by teachers, researchers and computers.

The British Food Standards Agency, which commissioned the trial, subsequently advised concerned parents to reduce or eliminate six colorings from their children's diets. A committee of the European Parliament then voted to ban all synthetic dyes from foods consumed by babies and small children.

Somebody over there was paying attention. But not the FDA...

The FDA still maintains there's "no evidence" of a link between dyes and hyperactivity. When it reviewed the Southampton study, the agency "found no information to suggest that the behavioral changes noted were adverse, detrimental or maladaptive."

Ok, they don't deny that there WERE changes, just that they're not adverse, detrimental or maladaptive."

Adverse: actively opposed; hostile. Unfavorable.
Detrimental: adj. Harmful; tending to cause harm
Maladaptive: Maladaptive behaviors refer to types of behaviors that inhibit a person’s ability to adjust to particular situations. This type of behavior is often used to reduce one’s anxiety, but the result is dysfunctional and non-productive. For example, avoiding situations because you have unrealistic fears may initially reduce your anxiety, but it is non-productive in alleviating the actual problem in the long term. This definition was taken from About.com.

I'm not sure I can put my comment of the meaning those definitions give that statement after knowing what my child went through before we removed the "Certified (―synthetic‖) color additives". Like I said earlier, my purpose is to inform people who want to know why my family chose to eat the way we do. My purpose is not to tell anyone what they will or will not do with their own families. I can tell you what we did, and say "hey, try this out". Hope this post is helpful in your journey.

Think to yourself how much food would be recalled if the FDA actually banned synthetic food coloring? They and the big corporations like BP all the way down to the commercial corn farmers would lose LOTS of money. They will most likely fight any food ban that causes a lot of money loss. As much as we would like to think it is about the health of Americans, it's not, it's about money!

Sugar is Sugar, Really? I Beg to Differ

In our family we have learned though some very valuable lessons that we have to stick to Real Sugar. There are no "sweeteners" here.

Our ds7 has severe reactions to any artificial sweetener. We do see an energy spike when he has regular sugar too, but not even enough to speak of compared to how he gets when he eats something with artificial sweeteners. Here is an example of a more recent episode, which up to 3 weeks ago, no one but my very close friends had ever witnessed.

Friends at church got to see first hand what happens when my ds7 had Vanilla Wafers in Sunday School. He spiked into uncontrollable levels of energy within 30 minutes (we've timed it) and would not listen to ANYONE! Making & flying paper airplanes during the entire class. Also, making them for others to fly. (How embarrassing!) The parents that had him in Children's church about 30 minutes after he ate the cookies saw how defiant he can get when he spikes from something he ate. I usually didn't have problems at church because we sent raisins for my kids to eat as a substitute, but that day he got the cookies. These parents were very structured in the way they taught and I never dreamed that they would not be able to get him to listen. You know the parents who come in and give them the rules right away with consequences. All the kids are sure that hey won't get away with anything!

Yep. They saw my son spike and crash. I made him apologize for his 'spiking' behavior right after church and he literally crashed to the floor. He said sorry and all but I told him that to restore his relationship with these wonderful parents who he disobeyed, he was to clear the tables and help put the crayons and papers away. He refused and dropped to the floor. "I have to fix my shoes first". "Ah, no you can fix them after," I said. "Let's go, we need to get done before the youth meeting." Let's just say he had a complete crying, yelling meltdown in front of everyone. I was mortified by this time and picked him up and carried him out. As I tried to talk to him and find another way for him to find restitution, it got to the point that he actually swung at me. He was over the top. So I let the restitution part go & focused on him for a moment.

We calmed him down and he went to lunch with the very same parents he offended in church. They brought him back after lunch and said he was very well behaved. Ds7 let them know exactly what he could not eat. Then I mentioned how sorry I was for his behavior earlier, and they looked at him and then at me and said. "This isn't the same boy that fell out on the floor, I thought that was his brother (ds5)." I said, "No, it was him." They were shocked! They said that they can't believe that this boy is the same boy that spiked & then threw himself into a fit. Then my ds7 says, "Yes, that was me, and I'm sorry, I should not have eaten those cookies." They accepted his apology and shook their heads in total amazement.

This was not the last time he has had a meltdown and we can trace back each time to something he had eaten with artificial sugars, food coloring, or artificial flavoring. All 3 of these things send him flying and crashing. Do you have a child like this?

Excerpt quoted from MayoClinic:
Artificial sweeteners currently approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are:
  • Acesulfame potassium (Sunett, Sweet One)
  • Aspartame (Equal, NutraSweet)
  • Neotame
  • Saccharin (SugarTwin, Sweet'N Low)
  • Sucralose (Splenda)
FDA approval is being sought for other artificial sweeteners. And some sweeteners, such as cyclamate, are not approved in the United States but are approved for use in other countries.
Newer sugar substitutes, including stevia and agave nectar, claim to be lower calorie, tastier and healthier options.
The topic of sugar substitutes can be complex and confusing. One problem is that the terminology regarding sugar substitutes is often open to interpretation. For instance, some manufacturers call their sweeteners "natural" even though they're processed or refined, as is the case with stevia preparations. And some artificial sweeteners are derived from naturally occurring substances — sucralose comes from sugar, for example.
In our dictionary Natural is present in or produced by nature; not artificial. The second definition is Produces solely by nature. It doesn't seem that sweeteners are "natural". As you can see above, Stevia are natural to start but then processed or refined. That is not a good thing. Why? You ask. Read on....

Excerpt quoted from Natural Sweeteners

They don't go through the similar processing and refining as ordinary sugar, they keep much of their natural properties and nutrients. Regular white sugar and brown sugar are empty of their enzymes, micro nutrients and vitamins that occur naturally in the sugar cane juice.
To sweeten foods, use a flavoring that is plant-based sweetener such as Stevia or raw honey. Since they type of flavorings are not cured or filtered, they are considered as natural sweeteners. Unfiltered honey is obviously not processed so it keeps its raw beneficial therapeutic properties such as vitamins and other elements that originate directly from nature.
We use raw honey in most of our cooking, baking, tea etc. We are still trying to find ways to eliminate refined sugar like we have with sweeteners. I have not had enough experience with Stevia to make a call of whether we will or will not use it. I really need to look more into that one. We use Organic Cane Juice or Sugar in the Raw (when I can't get that). We did grow Stevia a couple of years ago and we plan on continuing to do that when I find out how to use it from that form in baking and such. Also, after we research more about it.
The one "sugar" we stay Far Far away from is Corn Syrup in any form. Why? Read on...
There is an awesome site on High Fructose Corn Syrup. She has got some good information matching a lot of the reasons we don't eat food with HFCS in them.
Excerpt from Sugar Shock Blog
Have you heard? A recent study, which reveals that a diet high in high fructose corn syrup may be partly to blame for insulin resistance?
Check out the article on Sugar Shock Blog about the health-harming mercury that's been found recently in foods containing high fructose corn syrup?
Also make sure to watch the 3 min interview on the first page. HFCS is in about 2/3 of what we use for ingredients in our Homemade cooking. Did you read that, our Homemade recipes contain HFCS because our ingredients contain it. Shop wisely. HFCS is one reason we make our own sauces. We don't want that and other additives in our food.
How do we change this problem? Well there are 2 things that we are actively doing that are changing these big companies.
1. Stop buying fast food! They are just as bad, if not worse about putting all those artificial sugars in their foods! Start planning your day to incorporate what is the most important thing for your family. Hopefully one of those things is what you will eat and feed to your family. We all need a priority check once in a while, me more than others most of the time. If you don't have the time to make a full cooked meal each night, check out Wild Tree. I have checked out their products and this would be a great alternative for us, if we didn't make a lot of what they already offer, at home. (future post) I think this is a great step in the right directions for families that can't make everything from scratch every day. I still reiterate that this is a stepping stone, not a final step.
2. We can persuade them to change what they are putting in our foods, by not giving them our money for those items. If it does not sell, the stores pull it! We have the control because we are the ones with the money we spend on food! 1/3 of our paychecks go to food. So choose wisely where you want your money to go.
We are buying only the foods we are willing to give to our family to eat. If a store doesn't carry items we want to buy I go somewhere else. We are moving away from Supermarkets all together because of the shear fact that I have no idea how that food got there. We have no idea what's in it, since half the ingredients are not "required" to be on the label. So, since they don't want to change the way they do business, I changed the way I do mine.
We are transitioning to ordering fresh produce & meat from local farmers. We are looking into a share in a cow, for raw milk and we bake our own snacks. There are still a lot of things we get from the store like:
  • dairy based stuff: which will change with the cow share
  • some meat and veggies: until we make a better meal plan ahead of time
  • lunch meat: which will change with the new meat slicer on my wish list
  • bread: which has gone on and off since we can make our own, my kids are not thrilled with our homemade bread, I haven't solved that issue yet.
  • Pasta: need the pasta attachment for my mixer
  • Ranch Dressing: need to find a recipe for that one.
We are getting there. As we move forward with our plans I will post about the details. Nice to see it in print and not in my head...lol.

Note: The excerpts above are just some of the things we've read up on the subject I am posting on. As I run into the others I've read I will add links to them as well. We read a lot about these subjects and since we really didn't need to document why we do what we do, we haven't. We only needed to share with each other to make changes in our family. But since we are sharing with you, we will make it a point to keep a bibliography type list for subjects we post about.

All sugar is not created equally, and Equal is not sugar! Hope all the info here gives you a taste of what sweetener is and isn't. There is a second post continuing this reasoning behind us changing our sweetener. Please Follow us. Please feel free to share my blog on Facebook, or whatever avenue you chat online, with all of your friends that you think would enjoy or benefit from my blog.

We are Composting What?!

Human waste. Yes, you are not in need of glasses. We are now composting human feces. How? You ask with your head cocked to one side cause you think we have totally lost our minds. That question I would have to refer to my husband to answer completely. He has all the details worked out. I'm not sure what they are or if I want to Know what they are. The deal is that as long as the house doesn't stink, I'm for it. Here are pictures of our water saving composting toilet. The kids are all excited about it too. They have the process down good, and they are sure not to spill the Peat Moss or they have part in the cleanup and disposal of 'The Bucket'.

The new toilet is located in the upstairs bathroom to make it more convenient for friends and family to not have to walk up the stairs to avoid it. They really look at us strangely when we tell them we have a Composting Toilet.

This 'compost' will be processed in such a way that we will be able to use it for the gardens and such. I do know that much. So, this toilet is money saver in 3 ways so far:

1. Water Bill - water coming in house will be less, therefore water bill will be reduced.

2. Sanitation - based on water usage, therefore also will be reduced.

3. Compost is $3.00 + per bag or $25 per cubic yard, FREE

I can get used to the idea. Comes with a bonus: Mom doesn't clean the toilet! Time Saver. Love it!
My DH made this toilet with instructions he found and of course being the man he is, also modified. Then he bought a normal toilet seat to affix to the lid to the box. The 'hole' is a 5 gallon Lowes bucket, which he removes and replaces with a fresh, clean one when he empties it. (This is the part where I don't have to clean the toilet!)

You are probably wondering how we keep the stink off. Well, if you look back up at the first photo, you will see a bucket with a shovel on the 'conventional' toilet. The brown stuff, which looks black, in the bucket is Peat Moss. We go to the bathroom and then cover it with this for 2 reasons that I am informed of by DH.

1. Cover stink

2. This is how it is able to compost.

So, if you are totally intrigued and want to find out more on composting toilets you can see where we got the plans to build one and more information on the why we do it, read the Humanure Handbook. For my close friends here in town, stop by and try it out.

Hope you have been enjoying my posts. I have lots of goodies to share. Please let me know what your looking for, and I can do my best to share what I know or can find out about it. Future posts include recipes, homeschool planning, gardening, farming, baking homemade breads, Raw milk, eggs,         ok I have to stop....lol    Bye.

Yummy, Healthy Food can taste like Olive Garden!

We used to love to go out to eat all the time. I can remember back before we were homeschooling, eating out several times a week. Mostly because we were both working long hours and we liked fresh food. There were no frozen dinners in our house. Our standards were freshly made and yummy is great! We wasted LOTS of money letting other people cook for us. We now realize that not only was it bad for our bank account, but bad for our health as well.

We tried to eat "healthy" but all we could think of was how in the past "healthy" was aka 'cardboard'. Well we have found that the definition of healthy is not 'cardboard'. Healthy to us is yummy homemade cooking with fresh ingredients without GMOs or pesticides to name a couple things.

We have recreated our favorite eat-out meals in the past with great success. I'm convinced that the Lord gave me this gift... I can eat something 2 or 3 times and be able recreate the food at home. It does not always work, but most of the times we've found something we really like, it usually tastes the same or better than the original. Our game plan is not copy someone else's food for any personal gain. We just like these foods and want to be able to eat without the stomach issues that usually arises in our family from eating out or eating unhealthy packaged food. A few of our favorite restaurant re-creations are:
Hawiian Chicken Teriyaki
Cheeseburger in Paradise - Island Chef Salad with Curry Dressing
Chips & also their French Fries
Red Lobster & Olive Garden - Shrimp Scampi
Bennigan's - Monte Cristo Sandwich (very yummy but no matter how you slice it Extremely fattening)
P.F. Changs - Lettuce Wraps (appetizer)
Olive Garden-Chicken Alfredo
                       Bolognese Sauce
Stuffed Chicken Masala with Garlic Mashed Potatoes

Like I already mentioned, we like to take foods from processed food or even everyday recipes, made with ingredients containing preservatives, artificial flavors, artificial colors, nitrates, MSG, GMO, any corn syrup, and recreate them into healthy food for our family.

Here are a few we've created:
Mediterranean Salad
  • Chicken Picata
  • Chicken Franchaise
  • Chicken Masala
  • Chicken Parmesan
  • Grandma's Macaroni & Cheese
  • Spicy Chicken Lettuce Wraps
  • Taco Salad
  • Homemade French Toast (not just cinnamon, eggs & milk...LOL)
  • Quiche (different kinds)

We also have a lot of sauces and seasonings that we've made which are not listed here. Once we started making our own versions of our favorite eat-out foods, we have a really hard time eating out. We went to one of our favorite restaurants the other night, got our favorite meals and were thoroughly disappointed! When we left we couldn't figure out why we would pay $70 for that food. We won't do it anymore. Our taste buds have literally changed because we are not eating processed foods anymore. We are happy that we can not only feel and see the difference in the food, but now we can actually taste the difference! Which leads me into our new yummy chicken enchiladas, courtesy of a friend of mine, JS. You can read about that one in my next post on yummy, healthy food.

The Ever Changing Hairstyles of a Teenager

This week the 3 younger kids have been attending another local VBS and having a great time! On Monday while the kids were there I took my eldest dd13(JoJo) to get her hair cut. She decided to cut 10 inches off her hair (donating to locks of love) and get a bob style. She also decided with my help, lol, to dye her hair back to her root color & then add subtle highlights. Good bye to the red streaks in her hair. They looked pretty, but I was ready for them to go. See the before and after pictures below.

This was right after the last appointment in February 2012

These were Monday during & then after her appointment was finished.

It was a pretty drastic change, but that is her personality. I should just start getting used to that now. I don't have a problem with dd13 expressing her style on her hair. I just remind her of the damage that is being done to her hair by dyes and such. These are choices I don't mind letting her have somewhat control over. The rule is I must be there with her, and I approve colors and hair cut styles. IF the coloring is done right, I don't mind a little playfulness with color. I'd rather her experiment with her hair with our guidance then show up one day after she leaves home with bright pink and black hair. LOL.

My Well Planned Day!

I have this problem...which I have had for a very loooooong time. I love to make plans. I'm a planner. If you were to ask anyone I know they will tell you the same about me. They will probably also tell you that I change my plans Very Often. I am a great planner, but not so good with a calendar or schedule. I have had a hard time keeping a calendar handy and actually using it.  I have this habbit of our of sight our of mind. If I'm looking at the school plans then the meals & house get left to wastelands. If we are focusing on the house & meals than school gets lost by the wayside. We are trying to keep this from happening.
So this year, in February to be exact, I decided to use a free wall calendar that we got in the mail. I filled in all our appointments, plans, activities, church stuff, field trips, everything into those little boxes (in pencil)! Then I made sure it was on my desk always! I figured that if I could keep a calendar for the rest of the school year I would be worthy enough for one of those eloquent planners that I can carry around in my purse and use anywhere I go. So that's what I did.

I used this calendar for the rest of the school year. I even dug out a planner that my sister gave me earlier in the year and used that along with the calendar. Worked great! It even had a place for a menu & shopping list. (Note: those planners do not have enough space for menus or shopping lists)

After following my calendar for 4 months in May I started looking for a planner. One that will do all the fantastic things I need. So I made a list in my mind of what it needs to have.....
  1. Inexpensive
  2. Holds detailed homeschool plans for 4 children.
  3. A section for homeschool plans for us to complete together as a family.
  4. To Do lists (multiple)
  5. Shopping Lists that I have enough room to separate into stores/ sections of the grocery store
  6. Menu section for breakfast, lunch, dinner & snacks
Then I started looking for it. After about a week or two of frustration I found some planners that have parts of what I needed but not enough of what I needed. I don't want a planner for home stuff & then another planner for school stuff. So I kept looking.

The average price for any of the planners I found was $35 with shipping. Then I remembered a planner that a friend had shown me. It was called The Well Planned Day. It had everything on my list. I checked out the website for the planner and I was blown away. The planner was almost everything I needed and they had planners for my teenager too. Awesome, a planner for her to hang on to and be responsible for! This is even better! The combined cost of the 2 planners was $38.

As I kept looking I found that they were coming out with a new didgital planner very soon. This one was the limo of all planners! This future planner really blew my mind. The whole family can use this planner, and for multiple years. It keeps all the records, menus, shoppong lists, to do lists, chores, activity schedules, calendars, curriculum, literature, grades & transcripts on all my kids just to name a few things it does. Until Aug 1st it is only $40 for the year! YES! This is the Planner we are getting!

The name of the planner is Well Planned Day Software, You can find it here. Granted the planner is in Beta testing and is a bit frustrating at times to navigate, but this planner is gonna turn out great! I have been working with this planner since June 4th and I love it. They are taking our suggestions and turning them into ideas for the planner. Every 10 days or so they have a Q&A to give answers to questions and get more ideas on how to improve on what they have built so far. Well Planned Day also has a Facebook page where you can see the ins and outs of the planner and the Q&As.

We are going to be planning this month....meals, family contributions (chores), school, filed trips, etc. Woo Hoo planning here we come! Just a little disclaimer: I do not have any affiliation with Well Planned Day or Home Educating Family. I just like to share things that impress me. This impressed me!

Getting Ready for a New Academic Year!

Yes we are! We've been busy this month making homeschooling plans (and getting ready for VBS). We went to the HEAV Homeschool Convention in Richmond, VA. I went to some great sessions on homeschooling through the High School years. How to get ready for college and how to avoid college. There were so many vendors and I didn't get to meet them all. Got a few great finds in the Used Curriculum Sale too. BooksBloom was there with over 4000 out-of-print books. We love schooling with out-of-print books. We picked up some wonderful biographies! They are so interesting to read. They are written with passionate details on all different topics. All this gleaning through homeschooling ideas makes for lots of decision making about Foreign Language, Elective Studies, College, Science, etc. Not to mention all the things we need for my other 3 to use for school. How exciting! Over the next week or two I will share about our homeschooling choices for the new year.

Wow! I Have My Own Space!

I am so excited to finally start my own blog! I have been following so many blogs over the years, wishing I could eventually have my own and here it is! I have learned so much from reading blogs about families just like ours, who are moving through the toddler years and then the elementary years. Amazing that now we are in the teen years with one of our children. I don't even know where to begin.

Well I guess I should start with who I am. My name is Denielle. I am wife to an amazing man who is so very patient, loving, and kind. I thank God for him every day! We have 4 wonderful, very energetic children. dd 13, dd 8, ds 7, ds 5. We have been homeschooling for 7 years now. It has been quite a journey! DD 13 has had many different homeschooling options come across her desk in 7 years and we think we have finally found what we've been looking for. We like to try new things and not be tied down to a desk for long. Finally we have a style of homeschooling that meets the needs of our children with lots of flexibility and room for growth.

About a year ago our family made the decision to begin works on moving to a homestead of our own. There is just something to be said about raising your own food on pasture without all the additives, preservatives, antibiotics, etc. We are not sure when, where or how we are getting or own homestead, but I know it is in the Lord's hands. I have faith that God will move us in His timing and it will be a perfect time. For I know the plans I have for you...Jeremiah 29:11.

We are so excited to learn about homesteading and more about gardening. I think we already have a petting zoo in our back yard. We have chickens, rabbits with lots of kits (bunnies), our cat, Brie with kittens (not named yet), and our dog, Roxi. Our children have names for almost all the animals, but I cannot keep up with them all. We also have several gardens with about 50 different varieties of vegetables, fruit, edible flowers & herbs. All this on a 1/4 acre lot.

We are so thankful for all that we have and that we can share all these things with you. If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to leave them for me below. I am so excited to have this opportunity to share all our blessings and mistakes with you.
